Type 1 Toddler Revelations

6 months after Luke’s dx, we’re starting to figure out a few things:

  1. Milk on an empty stomach is rocket fuel. It sends Luke’s BG soaring for hours afterwards, despite all the bolusing, basal tweaking, and fiber/protein-laden food piled on afterward. Giving him milk after breakfast has brought down post-breakfast BGs from the 300s to the 100s.
  2. Magic butt cream for that really nasty, high BG-induced diaper rash: equal parts Desitin, Lotrimin, and Neosporin. Secret recipe from a local pharmacist, passed on to our daycare providers. When Luke was first diagnosed, the poor kid’s whacked-out BGs and PH left his butt looking like a 3rd-degree burn, and this was the only thing that healed it.
  3. Dog food, Playdoh, crayons, and glue do not list carb counts. Am considering putting together a non-foods carb list. 😉

    • Funny – Children’s hospital agreed it was from D, but they didn’t know what would help.
Glad it’s useful info! It worked wonders – hope it helps!
