Good news – for mice
Two more tantalizing studies are out with results that reverse or minimize the effects of type 1 – in mice, admittedly, but I’ll take good news where I can get it:
- Leptin + insulin = very stable, near normal BGs and vastly reduced risk of complications caused by insulin (such as coronary disease). Business Week gives a quick overview, and the actual study results are published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Not a cure, but a big step closer.
- Scientists have identified in humans an enzyme that kills insulin-producing beta cells. They know how to turn off the enzyme’s production in mice – if they can do the same in humans, the beta cells would stand a chance of regenerating.
As my husband pointed out – the mice are getting all the good stuff!
